The Arizona Greening Events Guide for Schools (The Guide)
The Arizona Greening Events Guide for Schools (The Guide) is a collaborative project of the City of Phoenix, Arizona Department of Education and ASU Sustainable Cities Network’s (SCN) Steering Committee. The Guide was created to help student event planners host sustainable school events. The Guide provides students with helpful ideas and sustainability actions ranging from marketing and fundraising to waste management, measurement and recognition.
Our goal is to help students host more green events that produce less waste, increase sustainability knowledge and lower the event’s environmental impact.
With The Guide’s use, students will green their events by taking on actions in five major categories that focus on reducing environmental impacts:
- Waste management
- Food and beverage
- Transportation
- Promotion and fundraising
- Venue and decor
By keeping track of these actions (which count for points), students can obtain a voluntary Green Events Level designation in recognition of their green event efforts.
Getting started
- Download and read the Guide’s information
- If you want to score your event, fill out the Sustainable Event Application form and email to sustainablecities@asu.edu.
- Keep score of your “Planned” and “Achieved” sustainability actions during the planning and implementation of your event.
- Once the event is completed, fill out the completed form Guide scoring sheets, scan, and submit to sustainablecities@asu.edu.
- 5. If points result in achieving a Green Event Recognition level, publicize the success of your event’s sustainability efforts as appropriate! (Registered Green Event, Silver Green Event, Gold Green Event or Platinum Green Event)
This Guide supports the learning outcomes of the Arizona State Academic Standard. The Guide can be used as a supplemental resource to help students engage with learning in a practical application.
