Summary

The Center for Biodiversity Outcomes partnered with the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, or IPBES, an independent intergovernmental body established in 2012 by the United Nations’ over 130 member States. Its goal is to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services, for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development.

IPBES scientists have been reviewing the massive body of scientific literature on the subject, aiming to organize and combine the information into a comprehensive report to aide decision-makers around the world. As a result, the 2019 IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services was published. Per IPBES, the last time a global biodiversity assessment of this magnitude was produced was in 2005.

Center for Biodiversity Outcomes’ Founding Director Leah Gerber served as one of the lead authors on the report.
