Welcome to the Center for Behavior, Institutions and the Environment at Arizona State University.

Established in 2006, CBIE’s aim is to provide a transdisciplinary research and educational environment in which to perform institutional analysis of social-ecological systems. Scholars of diverse disciplinary backgrounds work together to study the governance of common resources at different levels of scale, especially small-scale irrigation systems. With archaeologists and anthropologists, we study origins of cooperative behavior in hunter-gatherer societies. Furthermore, we study the use of smart phones in stimulating collective action, such as recycling, in large-scale social networks.

Through our weekly seminar series, various research projects and esteemed visitors, we provide a dynamic context of collaborative research.

I invite you to learn more about CBIE from this website, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news.

Thank you.
