The exterior envelope material, glass fiber reinforced concrete, was selected because the density of the material is relatively lower than other options, so it reduces the thermal banking of the building skin. The biomimic glass fiber reinforced concrete panels were inspired by the self-shading ribs of the saguaro cactus. The panels on each facade provide maximum shading of the windows while protecting the interior daylighting and views.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-5\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-7\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heat mitigation study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-4\">These axonometric studies below compare the solar effect on a solid mass, a courtyard design oriented south, envelope openings for airflow and elevating the world and brings planting and shade trees into the heart of the building at the ELAB. By creating green view corridors, it links the interior to the exterior. The plant palette includes native plant species, pollinators and habitat for indigenous and migratory wildlife throughout the site. Additionally, all but one of the air handler units on the roof level are plumbed so that the mechanical condensate, or the water produced by the process of cooling air, is conveyed to ground and used by the ELAB plants.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-5 md-4 mb-4 d-flex align-items-stretch\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"h-100 d-flex flex-column justify-content-center\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group bg-white border h-100 flex-grow-100 is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1310\" height=\"920\" src=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/waltoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/Sustainable-diagram-5-Water-Balance01.svg\" alt=\"Diagram expressing path of water\" class=\"wp-image-345\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity mb-2 mt-0\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"px-2 has-small-font-size\">Water Drainage: Rainfall collected on the roof and on site drains to the northeast corner of the site, where water is conveyed to bioswales that recharge the aquifer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<section class=\"uds-section bg-color bg-gray-2 \" ><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-0\">\n\t\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row justify-content-between\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"canal\">Maximizing use of canal water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To conserve resources, the site makes use of raw water from the Salt and Verde Rivers for 100% of the site landscape needs. Water-saving drip irrigation and \u201csmart\u201d irrigation controls are used instead of the traditional water intensive flood irrigation. This approach not only conserves canal water but also reduces dependence on city-supplied potable water. When water is not flowing to serve downstream SRP customers, two weirs hold water in the canal to serve as the storage tank for the on-site landscape irrigation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recirculation pump creates a constant flow of water which helps to reduce bacteria build up in the storage tank and provide vector control to prevent insect growth. Another pump circulates the stored water through a biofiltration system on the north side of the canal that reduces sediment and bacteria in the stored water. The use of passive and natural filtration processes minimize maintenance needs while also showcasing the beauty and practicality of a traditional source of water in our Valley.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"col-12 mt-4\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/waltoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/04\/sustainable-diagram-Canal-final-02.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-393\" width=\"1691\" height=\"574\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Weirs at both ends of the canal trap water to store it for use on this site when the canal is not actively flowing to provide water for downstream users. To help clean the stored water, it is pumped through a biofiltration planter. Another recirculating pump keeps the water between the two weirs moving for vector control.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-2 my-6 my-xl-10\">\n\t\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row justify-content-between mb-4\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-7\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"harvest\">Augmenting the harvest program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The site enriches the ASU Campus Harvest program by providing food-bearing plants, such as pomegranate and Arizona black walnut, within the site design.
