Shading the exterior is essential to cooling in the hot Arizona climate. Computer analysis helped the team understand the impact on reducing solar heat gain from the glass fiber reinforced concrete shade. The results show the variation in solar radiation on the glazing and the benefit of the shade with a small sliver of the glass seeing an average of full sun.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-5\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized p-4 border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/waltoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/Exterior-shading-01.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-346\" width=\"596\" height=\"323\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">These diagrams show the solar affects on the building\u2019s exterior shell skin. The user experience is enhanced by providing shade and landscape along the path including on the bridge where there is a substantial shade structure, parametrically designed to provide optimal shade and maximum visibility, and planters which are also irrigated using the Salt River Project canal water.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-5\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized p-4 bg-white border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/waltoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/walkway-shading-3-01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-348\" width=\"570\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/waltoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/walkway-shading-3-01.png 403w, https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/waltoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/walkway-shading-3-01-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bridge Solar Analysis: The shading panels on the bridge were designed specifically for solar shading and wind flow to allow for pedestrian comfort and campus identity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<section class=\"uds-section bg topo-white \" ><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-0\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row justify-content-between\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-7\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h2 class=\"mt-0 wp-block-heading\" id=\"energy\">Optimized energy performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the major goals for the building was to achieve increased levels of energy performance beyond code and the LEED prerequisite standards to reduce environmental and economic impacts associated with excessive energy use. The current building design has an EUI of 104 kbtu\/sf, a 20% reduction from an ASHRAE baseline. Incorporating on and off-site photovoltaic electric generation achieves a reduction of 50% in energy consumption.
