(2:06)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carmen Lucich is a poet who writes from her home in Guerneville, California. She is also an intern at The Cultural Conservancy\u2019s land project, Heron Shadow, and comes from strong Choctaw women and Croatian people.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row mt-6\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading mt-6\"><span class=\"highlight-black\">Audio transcript<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-7\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<p>Somebody\u2019s always home, and that\u2019s exactly what this place is. I can recognize them by their footsteps before I hear the sound of joy in their voices enter the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mornings, this is where we meet. Red Bird has yet to put his shoes on and sits perched at the top of the stairs. Luke\u2019s eating something weird, but weird in his good way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonny\u2019s braiding Dell\u2019s hair while he sits quietly, but that doesn\u2019t last too long before somebody makes him laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben taught me how to roast and peel peppers here. A lesson on corn nixtamalization came through Maya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And me, I don\u2019t like the smell of eggs.
