Miller<\/strong>, Principal Member of Technical Staff, Sandia National Laboratories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Timothy Zenk<\/strong>, Executive Vice President of Business Development, Algenol<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-0 my-6 mb-lg-10 mt-lg-8\">\n\t\n\n<hr aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-8\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Webinar #3 will include the emerging technological possibilities for captured CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;from waste streams (or directly from the atmosphere) and using it as a pre-concentrated carbon source to produce transportation fuels, which falls in the space of \u201ccarbon capture and utilization\u201d (CCU). CO<sub>2<\/sub>-to-Fuels is a research trajectory where the policy risks are unknown because of its intersection with complex politics of mitigating the risk of climate change and constructing carbon policy. Some think affordable CO<sub>2<\/sub>-to-fuels would be a major feat of science and engineering that is achievable \u2013 others question both achievability and the wisdom of a technology that recycles the carbon back to the fuels system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conceptual risk is that CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;is now by law treated as a pollutant leading to a primary focus on two choices, either CO<sub>2<\/sub>-free technologies or permanent sequestration. An alternative paradigm is waste management, which suggests adding recycling and reuse and even seeking opportunities for the waste product to be economically profitable and environmentally neutral if the right technologies are developed and deployed in a specific policy environment. The conversation could consider the implications of the impact on creating new options for policy makers to respond to and whether this can create a rapid and economically efficient response to CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emission control or slow down the transition by either not permanently sequestering the CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;or extending the life of high emitters.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-4\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":36,"featured_media":0,"parent":281,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-390","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"uds_featured_image":null,"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
