{"id":178,"date":"2020-07-31T23:51:18","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T23:51:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/futurevoices\/?p=178"},"modified":"2025-04-22T10:53:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T17:53:11","slug":"the-dry-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/futurevoices\/2020\/07\/31\/the-dry-land\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dry Land"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Voices from the Future | Sylvia Watchman<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/drought-land.jpg\" alt=\"dry land\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Dry Land<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/futurevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/IMG_5202-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-343\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Event: <\/strong><em>Since 2017, extreme draught has ravaged Canyon de Chelly, on the Navajo Nation in Northeastern Arizona. In normal years, the area receives an average of 12 inches of rain. That\u2019s not the case recently. What\u2019s more, the draught became worse when, in early 2019, the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife declined to release water from a 5,500 acre-foot reservoir thus making traditional farming in Canyon de Chelly even more difficult. The agency\u2019s reasons are still unknown \u2014 and unexplained to farmers in Canyon de Chelly. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Watchman is a farmer<\/strong> and Navajo woman from Chinle, Arizona, a town of fewer than 5,000 inhabitants on the outskirts of Canyon de Chelly, where Watchman has lived all her life. Chinle is a Navajo word meaning \u201cflowing through,\u201d a phrase that once referred to the water that cruised down from the mountains to fertilize the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>But native farmers can\u2019t count on that water anymore. Since the 1990s, record draught has put Navajo farming and culture at great risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I drive around the valley, all I see is this dry land,\u201d Watchman says. \u201cOver half of the people who used to grow crops here can\u2019t do it anymore. If nobody plants on the land, it will continue getting even harder, making planting next year almost impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of years ago, the natural water resources and rich soil made the valley an ideal place to plant crops and raise families. The melting snow from nearby mountains was another steady water source for fertilizing the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn April, the snow melted, and the water ran through the valley, and we used water pumps to irrigate the fields,\u201d Watchman explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But things have changed. The climate has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter storms that used to reach the Southwest have been pushed further north during the past couple of decades. \u201cThis causes our water table to be very low continuously,\u201d Watchman says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for her own farm, Watchman witnesses the consequences of draught every day. She has lost crops \u2014 corn, wheat, varieties of fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis spring we planted corn,\u201d Watchman says. \u201cIt grew about two feet and then dried in the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And her peach, apple and pear trees have been starved for water: \u201cThe fruits are really dry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watchman believes in climate change and has suggestions for how to respond. As a farmer and a tour guide for local and international visitors to Canyon de Chelly, Watchman acts as an advocate for her indigenous culture on many levels. She is committed to protecting her land and her roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have noted to the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife that we could cut down trees, especially olive and cottonwood trees, that consume relatively a lot of the valley\u2019s scarce water resources,\u201d Watchman says. \u201cMore water could also be released from two reservoir lakes in the canyon. I have not received any responses to my requests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her moments of disbelief about how her land could be revived again from the devastation of climate change, ancient Navajo stories give Watchman an explanation and, perhaps, some relief and consolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy grandparents say that everything has changed because our traditional way of living has changed,\u201d Watchman explains. \u201cWe are out of balance. Our winter stories are told at schools, books are read and films watched during the summer. Summer songs are sung during the winter. When people ask me to tell winter stories during the summer, I say, \u2018No, I cannot do that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watchman believes that people must regain a balance with the nature: \u201cThe weather is getting really cold now. Maybe we get lots of snow again, or maybe not. It is really hard because we cannot count on the weather as we used to and the way it will treat us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 Kirsi-M.
