This program invites us to explore how we can weave biomimicry with Indigeneity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biomimicry \u2013the science-based discipline of observing, connecting with, and emulating nature as the starting point for sustainable design innovations \u2013as such its worldview has the potential to attract Indigenous students. Biomimicry, in practice, recognizes multiple scientific roots, including the essential Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of Indigenous peoples of having a deep respect and relationship with nature. These essential aspects of Indigenous practice are central to the practice of biomimicry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In collaboration with Indigenous academics, educators, students, and elders focused on Traditional Ecological Knowledge, we are collaborating to develop a woven program that offers place-based, community, and nature-inspired solutions. Three activities have been implemented starting in Spring 2023. Developing and implementing Indigenous and Culturally Appropriate modules to be integrated into Biomimcry courses. The collaboration between El-Sayed and Melissa Nelson on a podcast called Knowledge Symbiosis: Can Biomimicry and Indigenous Science Harmonize – a 5-part series that explores the intersection of biomimicry and Indigenous knowledge system. The series is aired on Native Seed Pod<\/a> and the Learning from Nature <\/a>podcast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2024, we organized a gathering\/conference to explore the potential pathways for Indigenous students into more STEM degrees via Biomimicry. The National Science Foundation (NSF) INCLUDES funded gathering drew 50 attendees, 75% identifying as Indigenous from 16 tribes spanning ages 17 to early 70s. The main outcome was that Biomimicry offers a culturally relevant pathway to engage Indigenous students in STEM, contingent upon addressing barriers to access and success. Central to this approach is prioritizing relationship-building with nature, integrating the Arts (STEAM) to enhance STEM inclusivity, and ensuring consultation with Indigenous communities to safeguard data and cultural sovereignty. IIn September 2025, Biomimicry for Social Innovation (BSI), M\u0101ori leaders of Te Matakupenga (TM), and the Biomimicry Center (TBC) at Arizona State University (ASU) collaborated to organize the Indigenous Mycelium Gathering in New Mexico. The Indigenous Mycelium Gathering was held at the Ocamora Retreat Center in New Mexico, hosted by Toby Herzlich (BSI), Sara El-Sayed (TBC), Melissa Nelson (ASU, an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians), Marcus Akuhata-Brown, and Renee Smith (TM). The gathering brought together 20 Indigenous people from a diverse range of communities and cultural backgrounds, including M\u0101ori, Oneida, Anishinaabe, Cree, M\u00e9tis, Mohawk, Eastern Shoshone, Houma, Dine’, Kauai Hawaiian, and Pueblo leaders from Tesuque Pueblo, Santa Clara, Kara::Kichwa from the Andes\/Amazon, alongside biomimicry researchers, educators, and practitioners representing Egypt, Colombia, Slovenia, Ireland, and Costa Rica.
